Students seeking opportunities to conduct independent research, under the guidance of a faculty member, may apply to become Research Fellow in the Life Sciences, Sewanee's most prestigious pathway to earning honors in biology. Life Sciences Research Fellows develop their leadership and research skills while completing requirements beyond the normal coursework鈥攊ncluding up to two paid summers of full-time laboratory research鈥攖hat prepare them for successful careers in the life sciences.听

Each year, the Biology Department accepts a small and highly selective cohort of Research Fellows, each of whom is paired with a professor who serves for four years as their research advisor and mentor.
In collaboration with their faculty research advisor and peer mentors in the laboratory, Research Fellows are given the tools and resources to conduct ground-breaking scientific research, present their findings as conference presentations and publications, earn Honors in Biology, and embark on a path to successful careers in the life sciences.
